only the driver going too fast on Fremont Blvd. knows the story. but i think about it in times of crisis.

It was getting dark, overcast and i’m not sure why i stayed a little late at Centerville Junior High. i think we had a drawing club after school? i was walking my bike ….IN THE CROSSWALK….and i looked both ways on a busy time. I just didn’t see the car barreling right at me so my only reaction was to jump . Who says that life is not a “game of inches”?. but the back of my bike wasnt so lucky. the guy, a middle aged caucasian dressed in a business suit screeched to a halt and from there i think he jumped out and helped me to the curb and probably directed the traffic around. But what i recall mostly is his queries…”are you hurt, ok? need to go to the hospital? call your parents, i’m soo sorry but i just didn’t see you……”

All I could say was that i wasn’t hurt but my bike wheel is bent but i can walk it home. i hindsight i think he was worried. and something to the effect of don’t worry about that. are you sure you’re ok? so he did the right thing. Then he pulled out a pile of bills which later i found would have bought a deluxe Schwinn new. with money left over. “fix it whatever it takes, and i’m so sorry” and i left. 8th graders then weren’t too verbal. “I’m ok”

I made it home for dinner but my mind was too racing to talk much.

Later i bought a new wheel and used the rest of the cash to buy a really good transistor radio…a Channel Master…which i still have. from then on i made the most of life in Fremont . the redncks wore masks, but they were there…. . but overall i appreciate the support i got. and i got a lot.

BUT THE INTERESTING THING IS THAT WHAT WOULD LIFE BEEN LIKE ……..IF I DIED THEN……???????????????????????????
