OMNIDESIGN was First in Space. in 1977

founded in 1977 when design and home furnishings were emerging from the dark ages of fake wood paneling, shag rugs and . led by fearless founder mark jang, omnidesign brought fresh looks and multipurpose designs that could function in a variety of environments. ‘furnishing the future’ was a slogan. starting out i tried to explore all forms of design....graphic designs of book covers, signs, letterheads, logos, funky flyers, some maps, a little calligraphy, mostly small and medium jobs......i made a few small movies for my former employer, Hayward Park/Rec where i had met karen. .didnt make $ but i was still young......i tried to expand my photography shooting a few weddings, awards ceremonies, little league team pictures, squaw valley cheerleading camps, the Battle of the Bands photo essay, handicapped programs, ...BUT.... i realized that while fun, i would really have to ramp up my work and garner corporate jobs at a risk of time and equipment expense loss of independence.

There was a huge competition from many who wanted more creative satisfaction Anyone with a camera or an exacto knife joined the ranks.

Being an interior designer was even tougher. the only jobs were as a ‘ decorator’ and the hand holding that goes with the territory or working in a large architecture office which could support an interior design section.

Furniture stores were unchanged for decades. the offerings were equally dated. ...pleated drapes, same beds and appliances as well as sofas., mattresses ...tables and chairs.

we found a chance to start an entirely new concept in furniture. solid beech heartwood, clean simple designs, engineered by boat builders who became well known, shipped by UPS in a box with everything needed including, varathane, sandpaper, tools, brushes. ...for customer assembly. even the instructions were clever and fun....sadly the owners hired a CEO who syphoned the money to his house in Carmel Highlands and his sons pricey school. We had the first Bay Area secured dealership but we were only 3months into our Piedmont Ave. lease when they collapsed. Luckily we got a truckload of finished product to offset our franchise fees. ...We also got all the blueprints.! but it was too late for me to save it. We sold some pieces, knowing that our supply was finite.

With a lease started we had to think fast and had a store to stock. i didn’t have enough of my own stuff……so

How to create a second floor in your loft space without sacrificing ceiling height….if you have a 12’ ceiling make the floor 4’ high and 8’ above. use rolling storage, make a playhouse, or sleep cubby underneath.

i am planning to post photos from the omnidesign archives. ..including our holiday FRONT WINDOW DISPLAYS ….Carmen Policy’s office , the year of the Miami super bowl…White Christmas… HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY..done by G and A…..letters to the North Pole….Back to s’Kool…. and the 1988 All Star game played in Oakland. (we won a prize)…The Cal Blues

we stocked 2 iconic chairs at omnidesign. the butterfly chair commssioned in the 1950s by knoll furniture. it was discontinued but a 2nd manufacturer made a nearly exact copy. we placed them side by side. and the replacement covers fit perfectly and we carried every color! it was the ultimate kid’s lounge chair. you could lay upside down. most of the ones sold in the bay area came from omnidesign. see the yellow one in the photos.

our first great chair as the tripp trapp chair. i will post a pic and bio.

the 3 rd of our great chairs was the directors chairs. foldable, comfy, usa beechwood frames. great looking too. there were 2 usa manufacturers. we received a directors stool for evaluation from Telescope. we semi forgot about it on our deck. then 30+ years later last week we scrubbed it with a towel and murphys oil soap. the wood was intact, then painted it a tropical orange color and added a new cover set. see photo. i should direct a film . however we decided to go with Gold Medal. it had a rich history, a broader product line. and we got along withe Gittings brothers who owned it. that’s how furniture was distributed then. all trust. they had more colors of frames and covers and J.B. gave us a freight allowance. we still have ours. most of the directors chairs were sold by target ,pier one etc and were made in .taiwan.and outsold ours. but ours were usa made and only cost 15% more. so most of the USA MADE directors chairs came from OMNIDESIGN. our displays featured a camping pic of teddy roosevelt, thomas edison and………henry ford. ..? …in gold medal chairs. for us it was a quality of life issue. many many movies, safaris, camping trips, outdoor events would be grim without Gold Medal director’s chairs. ACTION!

as a bonus the seat ht. was 18” so it was used for dining as well.! or desks. soooo omnifunctional.

with the Corona sweeping through and leaving disarray in it’s wake, housing and workplaces will have to readapt. there is no blueprints or standards to follow. Innovation and creativity will be first and foremost. omnidesign is proud to reintroduce design consultation to help you revise your interior environment to new ways of life. sliding scale fees.

simple solutions for the dying planet and the corona blues

A. INSTEAD OF THROWING AWAY ORGANIC MATTER. we have a tried and true system to give . 1.find a shaded or semi shaded spot that is easily accessible 2. take a smaller outdoor garbage can with a tight lid. a 20 gal. size is good. poke an ice pick size hole or drill an 1/8” hole about 1” up from the bottom.. fill the inside with gravel to extend about 2” up or just enough to cover the hole. add water to make sure it drains out. 3. put a 5-15 gal planting pot in the center. there should be 2” space around the edge and 6” from the top of the pot to the bottom of the lid…. add about 2-6” of crumpled newspapers to the pot and wet it. 4. the best way is to buy 500-1000 worms at nurseries, online so that you get a good start. if you dig them up get at least 25 and add only vegetable scraps a little at a time until the population increases. 5. do not let it dry out, feed them fruit and vegetables only .some newspaper is ok. and don’t overfeed until you have enough worms. .DO NOT put meat, animal poop , sugar or chemicals in. 6. you may not get cats and raccoons but in case you can add a strap over the top.

the inside compost bin is not a problem if you line your inside bin with newspaper only. you’ll figure it out fast since you dump the whole contents in your composter, and a quick rinse and drip dry leaves the sides clean.😀🥰 worms eat the wet newsprint. the waxy heavily colored pages are hard to eat with all the ink. so white is best. no magazines.

we hope you like this omnidesign. i will post more on harvesting and dividing later.

less landfill…worms and worm castings improve the soil…lowers your carbon footprint…fun to watch them…great science fair project..ask karen…..some stuff like onions will sprout and you can plant them…and more.

we didn’t include drawings since it’s so easy.
